Als die Nazis die Kommunisten holten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Kommunist.
Als sie die Sozialdemokraten einsperrten,

habe ich nicht protestiert;

英语翻译之一：

When the Nazis arrested the Communists,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a Communist.
When they locked up the Social Democrats,
I said nothing; after all, I was not a Social Democrat.
When they arrested the trade unionists,
I said nothing; afterall, I was not a trade unionist.
When they arrested the Jews, I said nothing; after all, I was not a Jew.
When they arrested me, there was no longer anyone who could protest.

英语翻译之二：

以上的原文和翻译，应该就是这段话的最初版本。此后，又有若干类似的变形版本，不过一般都认为这种由“共产党员”开始的版本是最原始的版本。此外，一种由“犹太人”开始的变形版本，可能比原始版本更加流行：
